Local Color: Visual Artist Alfredo Garcia Creates Peace & Happiness

“I’m kind of obsessed with my work,” admits Alfredo Garcia with a laugh. “I think that’s part of doing art…it has to be kind of inside your bones.” A visual artist for more than 30 years now, Garcia has felt this way ever since he can remember – long before he first studied art in Mexico or found his home in Bradenton’s eclectic Village of the Arts community more than a decade ago. For Garcia, art is more than a passion; it’s a way of life. It’s how he cultivates peace and happiness within himself so that he can share both with the world. And if you’re starting to feel like a trip to see his work is the soul-nourishing experience you didn’t know your vacation needed, we couldn’t agree more.

Originally from Mexico, Garcia left his home country as a young adult, looking to expand his understanding of the world and live closer to his brothers, who had come to the Bradenton Area. A few years after his move, he found his home in the Village of the Arts and opened his gallery, Arte Coyoacano, next door. Here, he shares his joyful paintings, sculptures, and ceramic pieces with anyone who visits the gallery or merely walks by the building – its exterior and landscape a lively canvas of their own. It’s impossible to miss the bright colors, intricate mosaics, and religious figures that Garcia regularly features in his work, which are “highly related to the Mexican culture,” he explains. “I usually don’t paint what I see. I usually paint the things I remember.”

While many have tried to classify his work, calling it folk art, fine art, or a combination of the two, Garcia would rather not define it at all. He’d much prefer to focus on what his art can do – how the process becomes like a meditation for him and, through it, he’s able to connect not only with himself, but also other people, making them feel something.

Garcia hopes that feeling is one of positivity and goodness – or even a spark to follow one’s own heart, like he’s always done. After all, that’s what led him to the Village of the Arts, a community he loves dearly and will forever be grateful for.

You might say the Village’s supportive culture is the perfect match for Garcia’s gentle disposition. The neighborhood has been nurturing the creative spirit ever since it was first established in 1999 – a mission Garcia also feels deep down inside his bones. “I think we should never, never, never put anyone down. You have to lift everyone,” he says. These are words he lives by every day, whether connecting with young artists from nearby art schools or working on a new piece in his signature uplifting style.

Looking for the perfect local art souvenir to bring home or just want a feel-good boost for your soul? Everyone is welcome to stop by Arte Coyoacano and enjoy Garcia’s work. He keeps regular gallery hours Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., but kindly asks that you call before planning a trip – you never know when the muse will strike! The Village of the Arts also hosts Art Walks the first Friday and Saturday of every month. These events are a great opportunity to explore the neighborhood and galleries of multiple resident-artists while appreciating local music and food.
